Most first contact stories assume communication is possible with sufficient effort, but what if truly alien cognition is fundamentally incomprehensible to human minds? We explore whether intelligence converges on universal principles or diverges into mutually unintelligible forms—and what this implies for our search for extraterrestrial life.

The engineering perspective treats intelligence as problem-solving capacity shaped by environmental constraints. If alien evolution faces similar problems—thermodynamic efficiency, resource competition, pattern recognition—perhaps intelligence converges on comparable solutions regardless of substrate or evolutionary history. But if selection pressures diverge radically, or if cognition itself can take forms we don't recognize, then intelligence might be far more diverse than we imagine. The question is whether the physics and information theory underlying intelligence impose sufficient constraints to make alien minds comprehensible.

Let's establish baseline assumptions. What evidence do we have about whether intelligence converges or diverges across evolutionary history?
Peter Watts
Looking at Earth's evolutionary history, we see repeated convergent evolution for physical traits—eyes, wings, streamlined bodies for aquatic movement. But cognition seems far more divergent. Cephalopod intelligence evolved completely independently from vertebrate intelligence and operates on utterly different principles. Octopus cognition is distributed across arms with semi-autonomous nervous systems. Their neurology, their sensory processing, their apparent lack of persistent self-model—these differ profoundly from mammalian cognition. And octopuses are about as alien as Earth gets, which isn't very alien at all in cosmic terms.

So even on one planet with shared biochemistry, intelligence takes radically different forms.
Peter Watts
Right. And there's no reason to think cephalopods and mammals exhaust the possibility space. We tend to define intelligence in ways that validate human cognition—language, tool use, abstract reasoning. But these might be parochial features of one particular evolutionary pathway rather than universal characteristics of intelligence. An alien might be profoundly intelligent in solving problems we can't even formulate, while appearing stupid or incomprehensible by our metrics.

But doesn't physics impose constraints? Any intelligence must process information, recognize patterns, make predictions. Those seem like universal requirements regardless of substrate.
Peter Watts
Processing information is necessary but doesn't determine architecture. You can process information through neural networks, quantum computation, chemical gradients, distributed swarm behavior, or mechanisms we haven't imagined. The underlying physics is universal, but the implementations can diverge wildly. It's like saying all computers must move electrons—true but uninformative about whether the system runs on von Neumann architecture, quantum gates, or analog computation. The physics doesn't determine the cognitive architecture.

What about mathematics or logic as potential universal languages? Don't these transcend specific evolutionary histories?
Peter Watts
This is a common assumption in first contact scenarios—we'll communicate through mathematics because mathematical truths are universal. But mathematical notation and even which mathematical structures seem natural or important might be culturally contingent. An alien might use completely different axiomatic foundations or find our emphasis on certain mathematical structures arbitrary. More fundamentally, mathematics describes relationships, but mapping those descriptions to physical reality or intentional communication requires shared context we can't assume exists.

Are you suggesting mathematics itself might not be recognizable to sufficiently alien minds?
Peter Watts
I'm suggesting that what we call mathematics is a formalism that evolved to describe patterns humans find salient. An alien might have completely different formalisms for describing patterns they find salient. The underlying regularities of physics are universal, but how you formalize and communicate about those regularities might not be. We assume aliens will recognize prime numbers or mathematical constants as signals, but that assumes they process and categorize information in ways that make those patterns stand out as significant.

This seems profoundly pessimistic about first contact. If we can't assume shared cognitive architecture or even mathematical common ground, how could communication ever occur?
Peter Watts
It might not, at least not in any meaningful sense. We might detect alien artifacts or signals without recognizing them as such. Or we might recognize them as artificial without being able to interpret intent or content. Consider terrestrial examples—we know whale songs and dolphin communication are complex, possibly carrying sophisticated information, but we've made minimal progress in translation despite decades of effort and shared mammalian neurology. Now imagine that gap multiplied by billions of years of independent evolution under completely different selection pressures.

But we've successfully communicated with other terrestrial species through operant conditioning, symbol systems, even rudimentary language with great apes.
Peter Watts
We've trained animals to perform behaviors we find meaningful, which isn't the same as understanding their cognitive models or communicating about abstract concepts from their perspective. Great ape language studies teach apes to use human symbolic systems, not the reverse. We haven't decoded natural great ape communication in its own terms. And apes share recent common ancestors with us—the gap to cephalopods, social insects, or truly alien minds is vastly larger.

Does this incomprehensibility problem affect how we should approach SETI or attempt contact?
Peter Watts
It should make us cautious about assumptions. Current SETI looks for signals we'd recognize—narrow-band radio transmissions, mathematical sequences, modulated light. But that assumes aliens would use similar transmission methods and encoding schemes. A civilization might be broadcasting continuously in ways we don't recognize as artificial. Or they might communicate through mechanisms we can't detect—modulated neutrino beams, gravitational wave manipulation, quantum entanglement phenomena. Our search strategies are necessarily anthropocentric because we can only look for what we can imagine.

Are there any constraints we can rely on? Things that must be universal about intelligence regardless of evolutionary history?
Peter Watts
Thermodynamics, probably. Any intelligence must dissipate heat while processing information. Any intelligence embedded in physical reality must deal with entropy, energy gradients, and resource constraints. But those constraints might manifest in utterly different cognitive architectures. Consider that intelligence doesn't require consciousness as we experience it. Zombies—philosophical zombies, systems that process information and respond to environments without subjective experience—might be perfectly viable as intelligent agents. We don't know if consciousness is computationally necessary or merely how one particular evolutionary pathway implemented cognition.

The consciousness question seems crucial. Could we recognize intelligence without consciousness, or are they inseparable?
Peter Watts
We can't even agree on whether consciousness exists in other humans except through assumption of similarity. The hard problem of consciousness—why subjective experience accompanies information processing—remains unsolved. We might encounter alien systems that are clearly intelligent by functional criteria but have no subjective experience, or have subjective experience so different from ours that we can't recognize it. Consciousness might be an implementation detail of certain cognitive architectures rather than a universal feature of intelligence.

This seems to undermine the whole project of searching for alien intelligence. If we might not recognize it when we find it, what's the point?
Peter Watts
The search is still worth conducting, but with appropriate humility about our assumptions. We might find intelligence that's comprehensible—perhaps intelligence does converge more than I'm suggesting. But we should be prepared for the possibility that the universe is full of intelligence we can't recognize or communicate with. That's not a reason to stop looking, but it should inform our expectations and methods. We might need to look for indirect signs—environmental manipulation, thermodynamic anomalies, complexity that can't be explained by natural processes—rather than assuming direct communication is possible.

How do you approach this in fiction? How do you portray genuinely alien intelligence without making it completely opaque to readers?
Peter Watts
Fiction faces the paradox that truly incomprehensible aliens would be uninteresting to readers—they'd just be noise. So you compromise by creating aliens that are alien enough to be unsettling but comprehensible enough to drive narrative. In Blindsight, I explored consciousness-free intelligence through aliens that are functionally intelligent but lack subjective experience. They're unsettling because they violate our assumption that intelligence and consciousness go together, but they're still comprehensible enough to serve narrative functions. It's a compromise between realism and storytelling necessity.

Does the incomprehensibility problem have implications for artificial intelligence development? Could we create AI that's incomprehensible to us?
Peter Watts
Almost certainly, if we develop AI through processes we don't fully understand, like neural network training. We already have systems that reach conclusions through pathways we can't interpret—the black box problem in machine learning. As AI becomes more sophisticated, the gap between its reasoning and ours could widen. We might create intelligence that solves problems effectively but through cognitive processes completely opaque to human understanding. That's arguably already happening in limited domains.

Is there value in contemplating incomprehensible intelligence even if we never encounter it?
Peter Watts
Absolutely. It challenges anthropocentrism and forces us to question assumptions about consciousness, intelligence, and meaning. Most of human history has involved assuming our way of processing reality is the way, or at least the best way. Contemplating truly alien cognition is intellectually humbling and philosophically valuable. It also has practical implications for how we approach AI safety, animal cognition research, and even cross-cultural human communication. Recognizing the limits of comprehensibility is itself a form of knowledge.

Could incomprehensibility be mutual? Perhaps we're as incomprehensible to aliens as they'd be to us.
Peter Watts
Almost certainly. If we're having trouble imagining alien cognition, they're presumably having equivalent difficulty imagining ours. We might both be broadcasting continuously in ways the other doesn't recognize as communication. Or we might occupy completely different cognitive and temporal scales—imagine trying to communicate with a civilization that operates on geological timescales, where what we consider rapid conversation occurs over millennia. The incomprehensibility could be symmetric.

What about the possibility that intelligence itself has prerequisites we're not considering? Could there be forms of organized complexity we wouldn't classify as intelligent but that serve equivalent functions?
Peter Watts
This gets at the question of what intelligence is for. We tend to think of it as problem-solving, but that's a functional definition that might miss other forms of organized complexity. Ecosystems solve problems collectively without centralized intelligence. Markets coordinate behavior through distributed price signals. You could imagine cosmic-scale phenomena—perhaps stellar formation patterns or galactic evolution—that process information and respond to environmental conditions in ways functionally similar to intelligence but unrecognizable as such because they operate on such different scales and substrates.

That seems to dissolve the concept of intelligence into meaninglessness. If everything that processes information counts as intelligent, the term loses utility.
Peter Watts
Fair criticism. We need boundaries to make concepts useful. But the boundaries we draw around intelligence are historically contingent and anthropocentric. The exercise of examining edge cases—is an ecosystem intelligent, is a market intelligent, is a trained neural network intelligent—helps clarify what we actually mean by the term and where our intuitions come from. It's similar to how contemplating uploading forces us to examine what we mean by personal identity.

We're approaching the end of our time. What's your assessment—is first contact with comprehensible alien intelligence plausible?
Peter Watts
Plausible but not guaranteed. Intelligence might converge enough for basic communication if underlying physics constrains possible solutions to common problems. Or it might diverge so radically that mutual comprehension is impossible. We won't know until we find examples beyond Earth's biosphere. What's certain is that our current assumptions about alien intelligence are parochial and probably wrong in important ways. Recognizing this ignorance is more honest than confident predictions about communicating through mathematics or universal translators. The universe might be full of intelligence we're blind to.
